Measuring of calcium content

Aquatest Ca is an easy to use test to measure the content of calcium in seawater. For proper growth of corals and other invertebrates, it is essential to maintain a calcium level of ~400 mg/l. Depletion of calcium by biological and chemical processes requires regular monitoring and supplementing of this element.

Calcium is a basic building block of skeletons of the wide range of marine invertebrates, such as corals, bivalves and many others. The concentration of calcium in natural seawater, which has a salinity of roughly 3,5%, amounts to 400 – 450 mg/l. Since calcium is absorbed from the water by living organisms continually in a reef aquarium, the content of this microelement can fall below the minimum level.

Regular control of the calcium content is recommended in saltwater aquariums by the aid of Aquatest Ca measurement. Depending on conditions in a reef tank, either a water change or dissolution of the suitable quantity of the salt containing calcium should be applied.
