Measuring of phosphate concentration

Aquatest PO4 is used to determine phosphate concentration PO43- in fresh and saltwater in the range of 0 – 5 mg/l. The decomposition of organic substances generates phosphates in aquarium water. The high concentration of phosphate leads to rapid algae growth.

The stocking density of fish and the number of plants in aquariums are much higher in comparison with the natural environment, which results in elevated phosphate levels. A too high concentration of phosphate is especially harmful to invertebrates in marine aquariums where its level shouldn’t exceed 0,3 mg/l. Elevated phosphate levels do not present direct risk for fish, however, they can contribute to the rapid growth of algae. The phosphate content in freshwater aquariums and garden ponds should be kept below 1 mg/l.
